I am a romantic at heart. I am a mushy girl. I understand that. A good love story always makes me tear up. I cry at every proposal and every time I hear the wedding march I break out in tears. Yes, I am the sentimental sap who loves a good love story or a touching moment. All of this to say that even though I am very sappy, I don't go overboard sharing about how wonderful, loving, amazing and perfect my husband is on social media. That's not me.
Today as I was reading Feathers from My Nest, my newest Beth Moore book, which actually isn't new, I read a paragraph and it totally hit home. I often feel that people don't understand my relationship with my husband. My thought has always been that of, who cares, it's my husband and my life. I live with him every day and if it makes me happy then I don't care what you think. Being the people pleaser that I am, I often find myself defensive when it comes to how we do things in our marriage. Whether it's being together as much as we can be or our decision for me to work and him to stay home with the boys. I often explain why I love my husband and feel like I need to have a valid reason (or 100 reasons) for loving him. If you know my husband, you know he isn't a man built out of a mold. He is a very unique and passionate man. When he determines he can trust you, he loves you forever. Unending love. A love that defends you no matter what, even when he doesn't agree with you or you are flat our wrong. Why? Because he loves you and he sees the good in you. Two reasons why I fell in love with him was his passion and his loyalty.
In the last five years we have had MANY trials. Many, many, many trials. We have had some very low moment in our life. One thing I often say is that the trials we have faced weren't in our marriage, but in our life. This is not to say that Bill and I don't have any problems as a married couple. We have our moments, our discussions on life and our fair share of arguments. When you have two people with the determination that their way is always the best way, you are going to have moments that aren't pleasant as I like to say. But, our relationship has never been bad. I have never dreaded going home or him coming home. I love to spend time with my husband. Even though our time is most likely considered boring by most, we enjoy it.
Not to mention he is an amazing father to our two boys. I assumed that he would be when we got married, but I have seen this play out in the last five years.
While reading my book I read the passage below.
"Keith and I have not had a marriage without regrets. But we do not regret our marriage. Keith is a very reserved man, yet he loves me unreservedly. He is a man not many people really know. I know him. That makes me special. Ia m a passionate woman. I am passionate about Christ. I am passionate about His precepts. I am passionate about His church. And I have passion in my heart that God has approved and appointed for Keith alone. That makes him special. I'll still see him from a distance at times and think, That good-lookin man is mine. Often he'll take a seat and wait in the back of my Sunday school class for his long-winded wife to finish her lesson. His face becomes one of many...but it is the only one that looks at me with the affection of a man toward his wife. We are each other's in a way that no one else can have us. A singular gift of God. we laugh together until we cry. We cry together until we laugh. We have slow danced a million miles on the linoleum while supper boiled over on the stove."
Obviously her husband is not the same as mine, his name is Keith and my husband is Bill. But, I feel the same way about my husband. He's mine. He loves me unconditionally and his love is unending. I can't imagine that I am the easiest person to live with at time. He forgives, I forgive and we move on.
All this to say that after almost 9 years of marriage, this passage from a parent book can accurately depict why I love my husband. I guess my words aren't as pretty as hers.
